Untitled Goose Game
One game I know for sure has no themes of death, depression or mental illness: Untitled Goose Game!!
Oh, man. The way that I immediately needed to play this game.
I believe I had discovered this one by scrolling through the online shop. It was on sale, but it was still early days and I had just bought my first couple of games, so I didn't want to go too crazy all at once. But then... I couldn't stop thinking about it!
I watched the trailer for it: some strategy; mostly silly (goose) gameplay.
So you're a goose. You are provided a to-do list each level. This list will have tasks such as "get farmer wet" and "steal little boy's glasses". And you're not done with the level until all tasks are ticked. So silly, so mischievous, so perfect after my sustained practice in death and despair with the prior games. By the time I bought this game, I was all too ready for it. Stayed up a bit too late on that first run. In fact, had it not been for the ever-present threat of catching ill from the grueling winter season, I probably would not have slept at all. Just me, the goose and some 4am soup. Raisin' hell.
The graphics are simple cell-shaded friendliness. Like nothing could ever come to harm you here. To set the scene that this world is not to be taken too seriously. (Try telling 4am me that.) The levels/lists become more challenging as you go - and at an appropriate rate. This is also the kind of game that does not over-explain things, so part of the fun is in discovering what you are capable of. Especially since there are really no standards for goose games (that I know of, anyway), so you really don't know what to expect.
I will warn you! This game's end came just in time and still much too soon. I think that if it had gone on for much longer I would have gone mad or gotten bored (gone mad, obviously, I'm just trying to look cool in front of you). But - as with any other addictive substance - is one ever really ready to quit?
Very addictive, very fun, very original. I have no notes. I love a good, silly time. Against my better judgement, should I ever see a sequel drop for this one: I will be purchasing it. Toot-sweet.
